TONIA FUSTER
Tonia Fuster, Virgo, is 30 years old and an industrial designer. She lives and works in the Balearic Islands. She began her studies in Architecture in Barcelona but gradually intuition made her understand that his position within the world of design fit better into the world of objects and made a shift towards industrial design. It was at this stage, at the Higher School of Design of the Balearic Islands, that she developed a first collection of self-produced wooden lamps with which she was awarded the First Prize in the Art Jove Product Design Competition, which she subsequently had the opportunity to present at some exhibitions and showrooms.
After this experience and for some time, Tonia Fuster continued as a self-taught informing curiosity, pointing out ideas, working prototypes and researching in the lighting market to start making its way into the circuits that interested her most. She trained in studies such as that of Nico Guevara, and in 2016 she set out to create her own studio.
Tonia Fuster's designs are the culmination of an intimate and personal process, of experimentation and silent work in the workshop, of paying attention to materials and production processes. You can afford to be demanding and filter the designs to end up showing only those you are truly proud of.
In its creative process the common thread is everyday life. Objects that attract attention and that look and deform, transforms until it is able to adapt them to the world of lighting. Treasure hunter in the world of anonymous objects such as structures, gears, weights or levers, tries to detach from style so that their new function, give light, abstracts them from the symbolic past. It mixes traditional materials such as blown glass, with a more formal look at Scandinavian design of the 1950s, with others, which connect more with the design tradition of the 1980s, such as pergaminate and steel giving more diffuse lights. There is a whole formal tour, without prejudice, in her work already produced and that gives her a great capacity to always adapt to the needs of the object with the work. We would say that the connections with the design thread are back and barely to it.
